With a home World Cup upon us to Premier League teams touring Australia regularly, it’s never been a better time to get inspired to “unhang” and lace up the old pair of boots stuffed in the back of the garage.
Whether you’re looking to get ready for next season, earn a late call-up for the Matilda’s, or simply want to enjoy a kickaround in the backyard, here are a few drills and exercises to give you that Sam Kerr-esque technique on the pitch.
- Hamstring not Hamstrung
One of the most important muscles when playing Football is the hamstring. Strong hamstrings = Strong game. To support these exercises such as the laying of hamstring curls, Romanian deadlifts, or slow dumbbell lunges are great at stretching out the hamstrings and helping prevent any injury.
- Passing and Technique
Passing is undeniably one of the most important parts of football. Being able to pass confidently with both your left and right foot is a great skill to have and will enhance your overall game. Drills such as passing the ball off the wall (or with a partner) with your right foot and receiving the ball with your left foot and then passing the ball with your left and receiving with your right is a great drill to build up confidence with your feet as well as improve passing precision and technique – this can be done against the squash court wall in the club or at home.
- Skipping
Skipping is a brilliant way to train your fast twitch fibres – which are essential for sprinting and changing direction rapidly.
Skipping is also a great way to train up your calf muscles and their endurance giving you the ability to run for longer and with less chance of injury occurring.
Aim for 3 sets of 100 before your workout starts.
