Our recent Lunch with the Author event last Wednesday 24 April, welcomed retired Commodore Peter Scott CSC, Royal Australian Navy, to the Club on the eve of ANZAC Day. Commodore Scott served for 34 years in the Royal Australian Navy, enlisting as a raw undergraduate and rising to the command of both the Submarine Task Group and the Surface Task Group. Member Phil Smith gave the Commemorative Address and Honour Role of Members who served and died in Service.
The Commodore provided fascinating insights into his autobiography Running Deep: An Australian Submarine Life. The deterrent role of submarines in Australia’s military defence, the enormous changes that have occurred in recent decades to the operation and culture of the Navy and the ever-present dangers inherent in commanding a dived submarine were discussed. The great costs involved in military life for service personnel and their families was also examined. While the Commodore expressed some trepidation at the questions he might receive from the Book Club Members, all agreed he saw off all lines of enquiry with finesse and wonderful insight.
As usual our front of house and event teams worked hard to ensure the luncheon went off with military precision.
From members:
“My guests and I thought it was a terrific lunch and good value. This was because of the good planning and service from the Club. It also helped to have an interesting speaker on a timely topic. From my point of view, I think the day was entertaining as well as a fitting tribute to an important spiritual commemorative date.” Phil Smith
“Wednesday’s luncheon was amazing. The food was delicious and the staff were attentive – Commodore Peter Scott was a great speaker and very easy to listen to and glean insights into our Australian Navy. Well done!” Lyn Blackburn
