Next Book Club Meeting: Tuesday 30 July at 17:30 in the Members Bar

From Member David Castle:

At its most recent meeting, our book club discussed Tom Lake by the well-known author Ann Patchett. Most of us thoroughly enjoyed the book and awarded it 7/10. Patchett was a recent VIP guest presenter at the Sydney Writers Festival and is famous for her earlier books Bell Canto and The Dutch House.

While Tom Lake is much less dramatic than either of those books, it is more family-oriented and covers a situation in which a mother divulges to her daughters her rather colourful past. Due to COVID, the family are all at home in their cherry orchard which makes an ideal setting for family confidences.

An enjoyable read from an author at the top of her game.

Short descriptions included “mid-life meandering”, “a nice story”, “life’s different loves” and “American as cherry pie”.

A compelling reason to join the book club is the opportunity to experience a wide variety of books and engaging discussions.

The upcoming book for discussion is “Fierce invalids home from hot climates” by Tom Robbin. Our Book Club members will meet on Tuesday 30 July at 17:30 for their monthly discussion.
